JOHN GORE’S EXPERIENCE AND CAREER

John Gore is one of Washington’s most experienced government affairs analysts. In the course of his 35-year career he has provided counsel on politics and strategy for a variety of multinational corporations, including BP, Time Warner, the London Stock Exchange, BAES, Dow, Direct Energy, Goldman Sachs, Kellogg, Royal Caribbean, BHP, Standard Chartered Bank, Henkel, TNK and Xstrata. His commentaries from Washington and special topical reports reach over 1500 readers monthly. John Gore's Washington Overviews and Updates are available to readers worldwide via subscription.

John traveled from New York to Washington DC in 1966 to attend Georgetown School of Foreign Service (BS Economics) and Georgetown Law. After working on Capitol Hill and in the newly-opened Wasington Office of British Petroleum, he became head of BP’s US, European and Worldwide government affairs departments. His career with BP spanned 45 years and he left in 2002 to found his own government affairs consulting firm, Political Solutions International. He continues to work for big companies with big problems.

John’s speciality is understanding how government works and how to make government work. He is professional rather than partisan. He is not particularly passionate about politics. He much prefers good writing, good golf and good judgement.

Excerpts

The conventional wisdom reads something like this: The various criminal charges against former President Trump,

July 15th, 2023. “Long, long ago, before eruptions were invented, the molten lava had to be carried down the mountainside, bucket by bucket, and poured over the sleeping villagers. This took time.”—Dave Barry

Official Washington just took a two-week vacation in the hope that a change of scenery might cool some tempers. I went to the Big Island of Hawaii, where even the lava eventually cools off. Now Congress is back, but the eruptions are hotter than ever. “Double, double, toil and trouble. Fire burn and caldron bubble.”

So say budget hawks and conservative Republicans after having had time to read and digest the $1.7 trillion, 4000+ page Omnibus appropriations bill that passed Congress just before adjournment and funds the government through September 30, 2023. Business as usual, say those who have been following the tax and spend maneuvers on Capitol Hill for the last 40 years. The
last time Congress passed appropriations bills in “regular order”—passing all twelve appropriations bills—was 1996....
